Samsung announces 14nm Exynos 7 octa series for smartphones

Monday 16 February 2015

Apart from a slew of announcements at the Samsung Forum, it is also said to have begun mass producing mobile application processors based on its 14nm FinFET process technology. The company claims that it is an industry-first and the first processors to use the new fabrication will be Exynos 7 octa series.
The new 14nm FinFET process will ensure 20 percent higher speed and 35 percent lower power consumption compared to the existing 20nm process.
Samsung is also known to be incorporating “three-dimensional (3D) FinFET structure on transistors,” which will help Exynos 7 overcome performance and scaling limitations from the planar structure used in 20nm processes, says DroidLife.
This process is also speculated to be used in the upcoming Samsung 2015 flagship. Though Samsung hasn’t officially said anything, considering the timing of the announcement, it is highly speculated to included in the Galaxy S6 that is likely to be launched at the Mobile World Congress on March 1.
Previous reports have also been hinting that Samsung will release the Galaxy S6 with Exynos 7 and LTE.  Initially, Samsung was testing the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset, but it was found to cause over heating, which made Samsung drop the idea of using the Snapdragon 810 SoC. Qualcomm has agreed to rework the Snapdragon 810 SoC for Samsung’s flagship device.
